The old town wall is the stretch of promenade between the new pier to the north and Newburn groyne to the south.
In winter it is best fished over a big high tide on a falling sea at night. Codling can be close inshore in white water. Weed can be a problem early in the season.
You will need to get over the prom wall and fish on top of the large blocks; don’t to fall in the holes and beware of big waves.
You don’t always have to cast far, but it can be a big advantage to clear any heavy white water. This also gives you a better chance of holding the bottom.
SPECIES
Cod in winter. Summer is quiet, but a south-easterly sea produces odd bass. Big plaice have been taken in the past. Mackerel in August to a spinner.
BAIT AND TACKLE
A big black lug/rag cocktail tipped with white rag or razorfish is best for cod. Codling take crab baits between September and November. Use standard beach gear, a grip lead and a clipped-down Pennell rig with size 3/0 for cod. Landing fish from the front of the blocks can be difficult if it’s rough, so have someone with you for safety and to land fish.
GETTING THERE
Park in the marina or yacht club car park, or in the road behind the prom next to the apartments. It is a short walk along the sea wall where you can get a view and decide where to fish.
