The beach from the car park south towards Braystones is mainly fished from half tide up and over high water from a steep cobble and shingle beach onto sand and broken ground.
The beach in front of the car park and to the north is a low-water venue with areas of rough ground and sand. Night fishing in a south-westerly wind gives the best results.
SPECIES
Winter for cod, whiting, dabs and odd flounders. There is a chance of some bass into January.
Summer gives bass, dogfish, eels, flounders, plaice and coalfish.
BAIT AND TACKLE
Crabs catch most fish in summer and early winter. Sandeels and mackerel take dogfish. Lug and rag account for most of the cod in winter.
Tipping worm baits with mackerel is good for whiting.
A standard beach rod and reel loaded with 20lb line and a 50lb shockleader will cover most fishing. Use a 5oz grip weight.
Clipped rigs or flappers can be used because fish are caught at all ranges.
GETTING THERE
Head west on the A595 to Egremont. Turn into Egremont from the roundabout and at the end of the main street turn right at the war memorial to Nethertown. Turn left at the end of the road and 100 yards down the road turn right towards Braystones. This is mostly a single track road and will lead you through Middletown and on to Nethertown. Turn right at the phone box in Nethertown and this lane takes you directly to the car park at the top of the beach.
Directions : Turn off the A595 at the southern end of Egremont towards Middletown and follow the signs for Nethertown village. Cross the railway bridge and go on to the shore car park
