This is a rough ground venue for cod located on the southern edge of Workington.
The ground south of the pier in front of the car park offers easier fishing from a steep beach onto sand. It is rough ground onto rock and weed from the last groyne south with plenty of productive marks over the whole length of the beach.
Fishing is best two hours either side of low water, especially at night and in a south-westerly wind from September to early February. Best during October to November.
SPECIES
This is mainly a cod venue with the odd whiting. You can also expect coalfish and some rockling.
The summer produces small cod, eels, conger eels and small wrasse.
BEST BAITS
Peeler crabs and lugworms are the main baits used here. Using either ragworms, white ragworms, mussels, razorfi sh and squid will take some fish at various times.
TACKLE
A strong rod and a reel loaded with 30-40lb line will be required to cope with the rough ground. Fish are found under 80 yards out, so there is no need for a shockleader because power casting is not required. Try a pulley rig armed with size 2/0-5/0 hooks and a 5-6oz grip lead attached by a rotten-bottom system.
GETTING THERE
Drive west on the A595 from Carlisle to Whitehaven. Turn right at the traffi c lights at Lillyhall and follow the road through High Harrington and down a steep hill. Turn left at the bottom of the hill and go under the railway bridge. Take the second turning right, which takes you down the south side of the harbour to a car park overlooking the northern end of the beach.
