Grangetown Promenade is predominantly an autumn and winter venue which fishes equally well at both high and low water.

In moderate swells expect codling, whiting, coalfish, flounder, dab, bass. At low water, look for the holes after a storm, which will almost certainly hold codling to 5lb and over. At high water during rough conditions, be careful where you park, sometimes stones can get thrown up by the waves.

Fishing at range during daylight hours can be an advantage, but as night falls, the fish move close in.

September through to January will be the more productive months. Usually half tide up and half tide down, but in calm conditions, last 3hrs of the flood tide to high water. In rough conditions, low water up and back down again, if the fish are feeding well.

SPECIES

Codling, whiting, coalfish, flounder, dab and bass.

BEST BAITS

Yellowtails and snake whites are by far the best. Blow lug, ragworm, mackerel, peeler crabs and mussel will all catch fish.

TACKLE

Beachcaster, such as Century Carbon Metal, coupled with Penn 525 Mag and 15lb line and leader are ideal.
Two-hook clipped rigs with size 2 Kamasan hooks for whiting and flatfish in calm conditions. In rough conditions, a Pennell-pulley rig armed with size 3/0 Kamasan short-shank hooks for the codling.
