Situated four miles north of Maryport, this popular holiday village offers fishing from a beach consisting mainly of sand with a few rougher areas towards low water.
The beach can be fished over low water, but is mostly tackled four hours up to high on smaller tides. During summer the area can be busy with tourists at weekends, so it is best to fish between Monday and Friday when it is quieter.
SPECIES
Summer gives mainly plaice to 1lb, the occasional bass to 2lb, flounders, dabs, gurnards and silver eels. Dogfish are possible in darkness. Winter offers codling to 3lb and whiting.
BEST BAITS
Lugworms, ragworms and white rag take most of the plaice, with crabs giving the best chance of a bass. Crabs are the best bait for cod in early winter with worms taking over later.
TACKLE
Fish can be found as close as 50 yards early in the tide, so a light beach rod will
suffice. Longer casts give a better chance of fish towards high water, so change to a standard beach rod. Reels can be loaded with 12-14lb line because there are few snags, but use a reel that will hold plenty of line because the tide can push you up the beach quickly.
GETTING THERE
Head west from Carlisle on the A595 to Thursby and at the roundabout take the A596 to Maryport. On the outskirts of Maryport turn right on the B5300, which takes you along the coast to Allonby. There is plenty of parking at Allonby in car parks on top of the beach.
