50 years ago, Penn introduced the toughest spinning reel the world had ever known. The first of the Penn Spinfisher models began production in the 1960’s with the introduction of the Penn 700. The company dubbed this “the finest surf reel ever made” at the time.

This model actually had a large, fixed stainless-steel piece underneath a green rotating head. It was an extremely heavy reel and built like a tank.

The earliest – and rarest – Penn 700’s had green non-collapsible handles. Plus, the rotating head contained no internal counterweight. Without this, the reel tended to be slightly unbalanced when cranked.

That is until now…with the release of the sixth generation of the Penn Spinfisher.

This highly-acclaimed fixed-spool just got a whole lot tougher. The Spinfisher VI features IPX5 sealing that prevents any saltwater entering the gearbox or drag system. Plus, the HT-100 drag washers are housed in a fully sealed spool. A full metal body and sideplate fully protect the CNC gears, especially when under a heavy load.

Other notable features include a deep aluminium spool, so you can load it with plenty of mono – more if using braid – making it ideal for any deepwater venues. It boasts a tough cranking handle that allows you to really pile on the pressure, with an incredibly smooth and faultless operation.

PENN SPINFISHER VI 8500 LIVE LINER FIXED-SPOOL REEL

This model is designed for anglers who are targeting larger species in deeper water. The Live Liner system has four ‘on’ positions, that progressively increase the rear drag when needed. Matched with the front drag setting, a hooked fish is allowed to run until you finally turn the handle. This closes the Live Liner mechanism and allows the front drag system to take over.
