“I’ll be back by five”, I said to my wife, “six at the latest…”. With four children to manage and entertain the opportunities to escape and do some fishing can be few and far between on my annual summer pilgrimage to my beloved Gower Peninsula. Despite this, I had set myself a challenge for the fortnight: to catch five different species while I was there. Size of fish wasn’t a consideration as long as they were fairly hooked. With a few bass from the rocky gullies under my belt, and a small eyed ray from the adjacent beach, it was time to target a golden grey mullet to add to my tally. Far from being an elusive species the beaches of the Gower are a hot spot for golden greys between June and September each year.
