This week Leysdown, on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, offers some excellent marks where you can catch a wide variety of fish.
A mark known as The Green provides anglers with the opportunity to fish in comfort. A large expanse of grass, which is primarily a car park and popular picnic spot, also has a café. The approach road also offers a range of cafés and restaurants.
This mark is ideal for all level of anglers, including the disabled, to come along and wet a line.
Set up your rod on the top of the sea wall where it drops down to the shingle beach that skirts the mud and sand seabed. There are groynes set at 50-yard intervals, meaning there is more than enough room to set up your fishing station.
Thornback rays, eels and flounders can be take on sandeel on its own or tipped off with a piece of ragworm.
Live peeler crabs will search out flounders and eels, and perhaps maddies or harbour ragworms will find the better flounders.
A standard beachcaster coupled with a fixed-spool or multiplier loaded with 15lb mainline and shockleader will be ideal, along with a pulley-rig with 40lb snood line and 2/0 hook, for the rays.
You can use the same general set-up tackle-wise for flounders and eels, but instead of a beachcaster, use a light carp rod with a two hook paternoster rig ¬ sport can then be exciting.
Fish it on a flooding tide in flat calm conditions and two hours after high water for best results.
