Situated at the north end of the village of Cairnryan, the mark is mainly rough, with kelp and debris from a former shipbreaking yard.
Marks nearer the lighthouse are favoured because the deep channel is closer, but fish are taken from most areas. Lighthouse Point is usually pegged in matches.
Dogfish, conger eels, wrasse, flatfish, pollack, coalfish and at times, whiting and codling. Expect the occasional tope and bass.
Most baits are used, but sandeels and fish are favourites, with crabs and worms also popular.
A strong beach rod and multiplier reel are needed in the heavy ground, where some tackle losses can be expected. One or two-hook rigs are the best choices.
Extreme care should be taken because the high-speed ferries which come within 100yds of the beach put up a heavy wash on the shingle, so keep all tackle well back from the water’s edge.
Take the A77 and park at the north end next to the picnic area, but do not block the access to the graveyard cottage. Walk south along the coast about 400yds to the shingle beach at the lighthouse. Do not walk about in the open spaces because they are private land.
