Located on the eastern side of the loch, the picnic site is an ideal base for fishing.

Immediately to the left there is a rocky outcrop which gives easy access into the deep water, while to the right there is a boulder beach wit a small stream with attracts numerous sea trout.

The water is not too deep close in, but quickly drops off and a good cast will put you into a considerable depth of water.

SPECIES

May to October sees the best fishing with various species, including codling, whiting dabs, dogfish, spurdogs, wrasse, coalfish, pollack, strap congers and sometimes lots of small thornback rays with the odd bigger specimen to 10lb possible.

Winter means codling, whiting and dabs. The quiet months are February and March.

BEST BAITS

Mackerel is the main bait and will take plenty of thornbacks, dogfish and spurdogs. Worm baits catch most species, while peeler crabs will pick up a few decent coalfish and codling. The sea trout can be caught on small spinners or fly tackle.

TACKLE

The bottom is generally mixed, but can be snaggy. Any standard beachcasting tackle casting 5oz with a 6000-size multiplier of fixed-spool reels will be suitable.

Use a single hook rig and clip it down for distance. With the odd bigger ray or spurdog possible, use a suitably strong hook pattern.

Spinning will produce coalfish, pollack and the odd red codling. Light legering close in will give wrasse.

GETTING THERE

The picnic site is a few miles south of Fort William on the eastern side of the Loch Linnhe and right on the water’s edge next to the main A82. It is a convenient stopping off point for those travelling into the Highlands. There are plenty of parking spaces available.
